Health Connections - How To Improve Your Spiritual Health

If there were a way to enrich your awareness of and connection to your spiritual beliefs, you'd probably want to know the way, wouldn't you?

Heart Health

When you live with a feeling of abundance and gratitude each day, you will enjoy greater physical energy, stronger emotional health, and more fulfilling relationships. The Law of Attraction even says that a spirit of gratitude and appreciation actually creates increased wealth.

Heart Health

You can improve your:

Relationship with a higher power Connection to other human beings and to nature Sense of love as the source of common connection to others spiritual intuition Openness to others' beliefs, respecting them even if you disagree Commitment to a daily spiritual practice Practice of servant leadership, giving of time and talents to others

Suggestions for Taking Action:

Practice meditation. You may say that you don't really know how. You don't have to know any special technique or sit with your legs crossed. Meditation is just quieting your mind and eliminating all the distracting thoughts of work, responsibilities, to do lists. You can practice it anywhere for any amount of time. You can even practice in your car at a red light. Don't worry about the light changing - someone will let you know when it's time to go. Spend some time in nature. It doesn't have to be "out in the wilderness." It may be your backyard or a park. It can be in the city or in the country. We are all a part of nature - we all come from the same source. Reconnect with your source. Be open and respectful to other people's beliefs even though they may be different from yours. Ask yourself, "What is the opportunity in this?" You can learn something from everyone you meet. Read something inspirational every day. It can be a page or chapter of a book, a blog post, or an inspirational quote. You will find an abundance of positive material if you look for it. Choose to forgive someone for something. You do not necessarily need to tell them, but you will know in your heart that you have forgiven them.

Prevent Heart Disease - Make Exercise a Habit

Piscatella and Franklin state that "Americans do not exercise. We just buy exercise stuff." About half of the American population admits to being completely inactive, but 97% of people place health as their number one priority. Many people do not make the link between exercise and health. Koplan, former Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, states that "Physical inactivity, along with overweight, accounts for more than 300,000 premature deaths each year in the Unites States."

Heart Health

Exercise reduces the risk of heart attack by 50%. A regular exercise program benefits the heart in a number of ways.

Heart Health

Strengthens the heart muscle. All muscle responds to physical activity by increasing in size and strength. This is the case for the heart muscle as well - it gets stronger and more efficient. Exercise improves the heart's ability to pump and use oxygen. It has the ability to perform with less effort.
Conditions the heart. Regular exercise can reduce the likelihood of an excessively fast heartbeat in response to physical or emotional stress. When the heart is needed to pump more blood to the muscles in response to strenuous activity it can speed up to 180 beats or more per minute. This can strain the heart and cause plaque rupturing, which can lead to a heart attack, potentially fatal heart irregularities or both. It is the same with emotional stress. A conditioned heart is able to keep racing heartbeats in check.
Boost high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. High HDL is protective of the heart while lower levels raise the cardiac risks. Studies have found that walking 2 miles (3 1/4 kilometres), three times per week can raise the HDL by up to 10%. Greater increases may occur with more extensive exercise - but you don't have to run a marathon to get an HDL boost. Moderate, regular exercise can provide the benefits.
Protects the coronary arteries. The mechanism is not well understood but exercise seems to reduce arterial inflammation. It may help to do that by reducing stress and preventing the stress hormones such as cortisol from injuring the artery wall. It may help to protect the coronary arteries by controlling high blood pressure and improving the ability of the arteries to dilate.
Reduces blood clotting. Exercise reduces the fibrinogen levels in the blood and reduces the risk of platelets sticking together. People who exercise are also able to dissolve blood clots more easily.
Lowers blood pressure. The arteries are more able to expand and contract and respond to the blood needs of the body. Exercise also promotes weight loss, which in turn will reduce the blood pressure.

For a healthy heart you need to stay active. Everyone should aim for a minimum of 30 minutes of activity (which leaves you slightly breathless, but still able to carry on a conversation) every day. Incidental exercise can also count towards the 30 minutes. Being active also helps to keep the 'good' cholesterol at a healthy level.

You don't have to go to the gym every day to achieve the recommended 30 minutes of activity. If you find exercising boring here are some suggestions to make it more fun.

Get together with a friend for a game of tennis, badminton, volley ball or something else once a week. Enjoy beach volley ball on the weekends with friends. Join an aqua aerobics class. Go for a walk somewhere different once a week. Try a physical activity you've never done before - what about pilates or boxercise or karate or ballroom dancing. Create an early morning or weekend walking group with like minded friends - you can help keep each other motivated.

In addition to exercise there are many things that you can do to protect your body from the ravages of heart disease. Some of these things include a correct diet, cleansing the body with safe colon cleansing and taking essential vitamin and mineral supplements. You also need to reduce your stress levels with relaxation ad creative visualisation.

Exercise is very beneficial for the heart. Exercise strengthens the heart muscle, conditions the heart, boosts high density lipoprotein (good cholesterol), protects the arteries, reduces the risk of blood clotting and more. Can your heart afford to be without regular exercise?

Beans, Beans, Good For Your Heart, Your Digestion and Your Health

Yeah, that rhyme doesn't sound the same as it used to in my childhood, but the lesson actually is totally true. Beans are an extremely healthy food, no matter what kind of beans you are talking about. Now, I'm just talking about beans, not loading them with sugar and bacon and all that other stuff, but amazingly enough, even those types of beans are still really good for you.

Heart Health

Beans are naturally high in protein and fiber, two things that are often lacking in vegetarian diets, so this goes double for any veggie-mights out there. Lets see what else do beans have to offer? How 'bout they lower cholesterol and reduce cancer risk. Because of the high fiber content they also reduce the chance of obesity because they fill you up, and stave off further appetite. (Most processed foods pretty much are fiber-free). Wonder why you are hungry a half hour after eating store bought mac and cheese? No Fiber.

Heart Health

And I guess the original childhood rhyme bears fruit. Beans also help relive constipation. (Hey, it's good to know, isn't it?)

So why am I talking about beans? You can't get fit by training alone. Diet is thought to be up to 80% of weight loss. That's why Jenny Craigs and Weight Watchers work on the weight loss spectrum. The problem is that doing diet without resistance training will make you a fat thin person. Yes, it sounds odd, but your muscle will decrease and your fat tends to increase (percentage wise) as you lose weight from dieting. And since muscle burns more calories than fat, being a fat thin person, you will burn even less calories, and gain weight back more easily...and unfortunately the weight you gain likely will be more fat weight, so it turns into a nightmarish spiral.

The key is combining diet with weight training. (Yes, I know, I'm a record that keeps skipping, but the message remains true.)

So without further ado, another bean recipe. This time it's Super Quick Black Bean Soup.

Combine 3 cups of water, 1 -16 ounce jar of medium salsa (or mild, your call), 1 -16 ounce can of black beans, low sodium, and 3 table spoons of a chicken or vegetable soup base. Heat and eat. You can also add one tablespoon of chili powder and some Tabasco sauce, if that floats your boat. Spicier foods also increase your metabolism, have I ever mentioned that?

Alcohol and Your Heart

Excessive alcohol consumption can lead to a variety of health problems. The brain, the muscles and other areas of the body are all at risk when alcohol enters the bloodstream. But what about the most important of all internal organs, the heart?

Heart Health

Recently, several medical studies have been published stating the positive effects of moderate alcohol consumption on the heart. These reports claim that moderate amounts of drinking can help protect against heart disease by raising the amount of good cholesterol in the body and depleting the plaque that builds up around the arteries.

Heart Health

While these studies seem positive on the surface, the correlation between alcohol and good health remain unclear. In fact, even those doctors involved in the studies recommend exercise and proper diet as a better means for caring for the heart (rather than moderate drinking).

So while there a many reputable scientific studies which state that moderate alcohol consumption is good for the heart, these potential positives are FAR outweighed by the negative effects of heavy drinking on the heart and the surrounding arteries.

Medical experts agree that consuming three or more drinks per day can have a potentially devastating effect on the human heart. And over time, heavy drinking can cause several very serious heart ailments, including:

Alcoholic cardiomyopathy. Also known as an enlarged and weakened heart brought on by alcohol consumption. This is one of the most common heart-related problems associated with drinking. Congestive heart failure. Because alcohol makes the heart act in a more "sluggish" manner, those predisposed (genetically) for congestive heart failure are more likely to experience heart problems related to drinking. Stroke. Alcohol in heavy doses can cause hypertension (see below), atrial fibrillation and cardiomyopathy - three of the major causes of strokes. While this is another area where some research shows moderate drinking as a way to avoid strokes, there are still too many negative effects to be ignored.

High blood pressure is a problem among heavy drinkers. Studies of men and women over the age of 40 show that drinking 4 or more drinks a day makes an individual twice as likely to experience hypertension. These studies are in line with other reports that link alcoholism to a variety of severe health problems in adults over the age of 40.

Another key health concern brought on by heavy drinking is the lowering of one's blood pressure. Alcohol is what is known as a vasodilator, meaning that it causes many key blood vessels to "relax" when consumed. While on the surface this might not sound like such a bad thing, the relaxation of the blood vessels means more blood is going to flow through skin and tissues. (Hence the "red faced" appearance of someone who is intoxicated.) With a larger percentage of the body getting blood flow, the drinker now experiences lower blood pressure. This low blood pressure means the heart must work extra-hard to make sure all the vital organs are receiving proper blood flow. And as most people know, increased heart rate over time leads to a weakening of the heart itself.

In a more extreme situation, heavy drinking can also cause heart rates to drop - which may precede coma or death.

The bottom line is this: while some studies have correctly shown moderate drinking to have some positive effects on the heart, the potential long-term effects are MUCH more damaging. Heart problems brought on by alcohol abuse are insidious - the problems build up over time during a life spent drinking heavily. Unchecked, the problem can get worse and worse until it is all but untreatable. So when you add it all up, the best way to take care of your heart (as it relates to alcohol) is to bypass drinking altogether.

Sacred Heart Memorial Hospital Diet - A Review

The Sacred Heart Memorial Hospital Diet (also known as the Sacred Heart Diet) is another of those diets which, like the Tuna Fish Diet, is attributed to hospital staff who were attempting to reduce the weight of a cardiac patient by some 10 lbs. It has been around since at least the 1980's and takes the form of a vegetable soup which is consumed, along with a few other foods, over a period of seven days.

Heart Health

Intending users should be aware that the origin of this plan is uncertain. Hospitals have denied being the source, as have other institutions that have been nominated as likely creators, including the American Heart Association.

Heart Health

Nonetheless, the diet continues to be circulated and has adherents who are happy to use it, along with others who were skeptical or did not find it useful. This soup diet is also known as the Cleveland Clinic Diet, the Cabbage Soup Diet, and the Spokane Heart Diet. I have found reports from users who state that they were introduced to it by their medical practitioner.

The dieter is expected to eat the soup at least once a day and, at various times, meats, rice, vegetables and fruit may be included in the eating plan. Excluded are bread and alcohol. Included are Chicken Noodle Soup, stewed tomatoes, beef broth, celery and more. The only drinks permitted are water, black coffee, cranberry juice (unsweetened) and skimmed milk. A detailed outline of this plan can be found with a quick search for my article "Sacred Heart Memorial Hospital Diet - Recipe and Diet Plan".

EFFECTS:

1. The Sacred Heart Memorial Hospital Diet is essentially a low calorie, short term diet, with the difficulties typical of such a plan, such as dizziness, lack of energy, occasional diarrhea and sometimes fainting.

2. Short term weight loss is often water loss rather than fat loss and is easily regained once the diet has ended.

3. The body tends to conserve energy and fat reserves with low calorie diets. This makes it harder for lasting weight loss to occur.

4. There are reports of significant amounts of weight reduction but the feelings of hunger and discomfort caused by this diet plan make it likely the user will eat excessively after the seven days of restricted eating. Thus the amount of weight that has been lost will soon be regained.

5. A change in eating habits is not required except for the seven day period of the diet. This means that the benefits are unlikely to continue as returning to the same conditions as before will soon restore whatever has been lost.

To obtain lasting weight loss requires, in effect, a change of lifestyle - a different selection of foods as part of the normal diet rather than a crash program that adds stress to the body and provides only short term benefits. Such a plan would include food that has high nutritional value and suits the tastes and preferences of the dieter. As well, a significant portion of the weight that has been lost should be fat loss and not merely water which is easily replaced. Unfortunately, the Sacred Heart Memorial Hospital Diet does not meet these requirements.

How Caffeine Can Affect Your Health

In a regular cup of coffee there are about 170 mg of caffeine and in decaffeinated coffee there are about 30/40 mg of caffeine.

Heart Health

On the stock market, Coffee is a 90 billion dollar industry but what is significant is that just in North America 85%+ drink 3 to 5 cups of coffee per day. A huge number of people are at risk for many of the issues surrounding coffee consumption.

Heart Health

Top Ten Reasons why you should consider switching to a "Healthy Coffee"

Top 10 Caffeine-Related Health Problems

Cardiovascular Problems

Caffeine increases your heart rate, elevates your blood pressure, and can contribute to the development of heart disease. Both decaf and regular coffee increase your cholesterol and homocysteine, the biochemical that science has linked to increased risk for heart attack. Caffeine is also linked to coronary vasospasms, the cause for 20% of all fatal heart attacks which kill otherwise perfectly healthy people.
Stress

Caffeine stimulates the excretion of stress hormones which can produce increased levels of anxiety, irritability, muscular tension and pain, indigestion, insomnia, and decreased immunity. Increased levels of stress from caffeine can keep you from being able to make healthy responses to the normal daily stress everyone is subjected to in their lives.

Emotional Disturbances

Anxiety and irritability are hallmark mood disturbances associated with caffeine consumption, but equally important is depression and attention disorders. Depression may occur as part of the let down after the stimulant effects of caffeine wears off. It may also appear during the recovery period after quitting caffeine while the brain's chemistry is readjusted. Caffeine rather than increasing mental activity actually decreases blood flow to the brain by as much as 30% and negatively effects memory and mental performance.

Blood Sugar Swings

Diabetics and hypoglycemics should avoid caffeine because it stimulates a temporary surge in blood sugar which is then followed by an overproduction of insulin that causes a blood sugar crash within hours. If you're trying to loose weight, this rollercoaster will actually cause weight gain since insulin's message to the body is to store excess sugar as fat.

Gastrointestinal Problems

Many people experience a burning sensation in their stomach after drinking coffee because coffee increases the secretion of hydrochloric acid leading to an increased risk for ulcers. Coffee, including decaf, reduces the pressure on the valve between the esophagus and the stomach so that the highly acidic contents of the stomach pass up to the esophagus leading to heartburn and gastro-esophageal reflux disease. With America 's high consumption of coffee, its no wonder the best selling over-the-counter drugs are the so-called antacids.

Nutritional Deficiencies

Caffeine inhibits the absorption of some nutrients and causes the urinary excretion of calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron and trace minerals, all essential elements necessary for good health.
Male Health Problems

Male Health Issues

Coffee is an irritant to the urinary tract and bladder. It is also a diuretic that aggravates conditions associated with frequent urination. Eliminating coffee and caffeine often relieves symptoms associated with frequent urination due to enlarged prostate glands.

Dr. Milton Krisiloff, M.D. has found that in the majority of cases, men can significantly reduce their risk for urinary and prostate problems by making dietary changes which include eliminating coffee and caffeine.

Female Health Problems

Fibrocystic breast disease, PMS, osteoporosis, infertility problems, miscarriage, low birth weight infants, and menopausal problems such as hot flashes are all exacerbated by caffeine consumption. Women on birth control pills are particularly at risk since they have a decreased ability to detoxify caffeine.

Adrenal Exhaustion

Caffeine consumption leads to eventual adrenal exhaustion which can leave you vulnerable to a variety of health disorders related to inflammation, autoimmunity, and fatigue.
Aging

Many people find in their forties that they can no longer tolerate the same level of caffeine consumption as they could in their twenties and thirties. The production of DHEA, melatonin, and other vital hormones start to decline and caffeine speeds up that downhill drop. Caffeine dehydrates the body and contributes to the aging of the skin and kidneys. It has been shown to inhibit DNA repair and slow the ability of the liver to detoxify foreign toxins.

Exhausted Adrenal Glands

Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant. It causes the adrenal glands to secrete adrenaline, the hormone your body depends on in emergencies to elevate your heart rate, increase your respiration and blood pressure for a rapid flight-or-fight response. When you overuse stimulants, the adrenals become exhausted. If your caffeine sensitivity has diminished or you're one of those who claims you can drink 3 shots of espresso and go right to sleep, guess what? Your adrenals have given up responding. This means you have less resistance to stress, which leaves you vulnerable to health hazards such as environmental pollutants and disease pathogens

Severe Blood Sugar Swings

Caffeine forces the liver to release glycogen into the blood stream. The pancreas responds to the sudden rise in blood sugar by releasing insulin, the hormone which causes excess carbohydrates to be stored as fat. Within the span of an hour or two, the result is a sharp blood sugar drop resulting in a state of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). That's when you think it's time for another cup of coffee and the whole cycle starts up again.

Acid Imbalance

Over 208 acids in coffee can contribute to indigestion and a wide variety of health problems resulting from over-acidity associated with arthritic, rheumatic and skin irritations. Many people experience a burning sensation in their stomach after drinking coffee because coffee increases the secretion of acid in the stomach. Optimal health calls for an alkaline pH balance in the body.

Essential Mineral Depletion

Coffee inhibits the absorption of some nutrients and causes the urinary excretion of calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron and trace minerals, all essential elements necessary for good health. Women need to be concerned about osteoporosis as menopause sets in. Studies show that women who drink coffee have an increased incidence of osteoporosis compared to non-coffee drinkers. Men are not immune to osteoporosis either.

These are a number of health conditions for which doctors advise their patients to eliminate coffee and all caffeine from their diet.

Acid indigestion
Anxiety, irritability and nervousness
Candida or yeast problems
Colitis, diverticulitis, diarrhea and other irritable bowel symptoms
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and other auto-immune disorders
Diabetes or hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
Dizziness, Meniere's syndrome or tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
Gout (Elevated Uric Acid levels)
Heart disease or heart palpitations
High blood pressure
High cholesterol
Insomnia and interrupted or poor quality sleep
Liver disease and gallbladder problems such as gallstones
Kidney or bladder problems including kidney stones
Migraines or other vascular headaches
Osteoporosis
Skin irritations, rashes and dryness
Ulcers, heartburn, and stomach problems such as hiatal hernias
Urinary tract irritation
