Dialysis and Fish Oil Supplements; Dialysis Patients May Not Eat Enough Fish

Research concerning kidney dialysis and fish oil supplements indicates that many dialysis patients are not eating enough fish. The primary dietary sources of omega-3 fatty acids are fish. Omega 3s are important for heart and brain health. Research conducted at the Indiana University School of Medicine indicates that patients receiving dialysis may not be eating enough fish.

The study, published in the American Journal of Kidney Diseases in May of 2006, focused on the diets of 75 long-term dialysis patients. Of the 75, 65% did not meet the American Heart Association's fish-consumption guidelines for healthy persons, which is simply to eat fish at least twice a week. Research has shown that eating fish, the best known sources of omega-3 fatty acids, may lower the risk of death from coronary artery disease, commonly referred to as "heart disease".

Patients receiving dialysis have an increased risk of developing heart disease. Researchers hope that they can reduce this risk by encouraging dialysis patients to consume more fish.

Questions related to dialysis and fish oil supplements were not specifically addressed by the researchers at Indiana U, but researchers at the Tor Vergata University in Rome conducted a study using omega-3 fish oil supplements and vitamin E. They believe that the anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties of these supplements may help protect the blood cells of dialysis patients from oxidative stress, possibly increasing the person's lifespan.

Numerous health benefits have been associated with omega-3 fatty acids. Initially scientists, doctors and researchers noticed that the prevalence of heart disease was much lower in cultures with a fish-based diet, particularly fatty fish.

Too much fat in the diet has long been associated with an increased risk for heart disease and most experts recommend limiting the number of calories from fat to 30% of the total caloric intake. However, all fat is not the same.

Some fats are good for the body, help reduce inflammation and actually clean out the arteries. These fats are also needed for optimal brain function. 50% of the brain's weight is fat. A full one third of the brain's mass is long chain omega-3 fat. It is easy to see how a diet that does not constantly replenish these types of fat can inhibit the function of the brain. In the arteries of the heart, these long chain fats actually help remove the artery clogging plaque that is the primary cause of coronary artery or heart disease.

On the other hand, some fats are bad for the body. These are the artery clogging fats that increase blood pressure, body weight and inflammation. Recent research indicates that chronic inflammation may lead to all types of cancer. The bottom line is that "bad" fats may cause heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity and cancer. While the "good" fats may prevent heart disease, reduce the risk of cancer, high blood pressure, obesity, aging, memory loss, depression and many other chronic and life-threatening health conditions.

The sources of omega-3 fatty acids or "good" fat include olive oil, almonds, avocados and fish oil. Bad fat comes from red meat, egg yolks, processed foods, liver and other organ meats. Good fats are monunsaturated. Bad fats are saturated.

Some experts recommend as much as 5 grams of fish oil per day, even if a person eats fish two or three times per week. Because of mercury contamination and other pollutants in fish, most experts do not recommend eating certain types of fish more than twice a week. The recommendations for certain types of fish, particularly those that swim in the Atlantic Ocean, is even lower.

Those persons under a doctor's care should consult their physicians before adding fish oil to their diets. Certain conditions can be aggravated by omega-3 fatty acids. How Does Menopause Effect Women's Health

After a woman reaches menopause she is vulnerable to a range of long-term health risks due to the loss of estrogen. Effects of menopause on a menopausal woman's health are discussed below.

Effect on Heart: Menopausal women face a higher risk of heart diseases. This is blamed at the fall in estrogen levels which help in:

o Maintaining cholesterol levels.

o Smoothing and opening of blood vessels which help in normal flow of blood and reducing pressure.

o Reducing oxygen free radicals which can damage arteries.

Urinary Tract Effects: After menopause women are at an increased risk of getting urinary tract infections due to fall in estrogen levels. Estrogen helps in resisting the infection by increasing the number of microorganisms that fight the bacteria trying to adhere to vaginal cells.

Other Effects: Sleep disorders, gum disorders and tooth loss, eye disorders, wrinkles and incontinence are other health effects that are caused by fall in estrogen levels brought about by menopause. Estrogens prevent eye disorders such as cataract, glaucoma and macular degeneration. They also prevent against stress. Research shows that fall in estrogens make it more likely for a woman to have gum disorder and tooth loss. Further, estrogens also prevent slackness in the skin caused by excessive fat.

How Long After Exercise Should Your Heart Rate Return to Normal?

It has already been established that exercising will require you to be conscious of the rate of your heart. This can actually make or break your exercise routine. If you do too much strenuous physical work, you can tire your heart out easily. If you do too less, you might not be harnessing your best physical potential.

If you are exercising, your hear rate should return to normal once you have finished. Give it about 15 minutes and it should return to normal. It is imperative though that you do low energy activity after weight training or after doing strenuous activities. This is to help calm down your racing heart and to gradually slow it down.

This way, you can immediately tell if your heart is taking such a long time returning to normal and you can tell a slight change in its pattern.

Heart rate monitors are replete in the health and fitness market today. They include some great functions such as the ability to measure the rate of your heart while in the resting stage, your minimum, maximum and average rate. This is a good tool to maximize those workout schemes.

Each year thousands of people rush to the emergency room with complaints of chest pains, shortness of breath, and nausea.

Most, if not all, think they are having a heart attack. Once tests are completed they find out their heart is fine.

What they've experienced is an anxiety attack. The symptoms of an anxiety attack vs. heart attack can be very similar.

How can you tell the difference?

Truthfully it is not always easy to tell the difference. Both an anxiety attack and a heart attack can cause increased heart rate and even irregular heartbeats.

Learning to distinguish the difference between the two is difficult for most people. Either type of attack can cause discomfort and pain.

The Heart Races Anxiety or Heart Attack?

Approximately eighty percent of people having anxiety attacks have a rapid or irregular heart rate. Many of these people think they are on the verge of having a heart attack.

They will complain that their heart is racing, or beating much too fast. In most cases if rapid heart rate is not accompanied by severe pain its an anxiety attack.

While heart rate will change during a heart attack, the more common symptom that is not usually present with an anxiety attach is extreme pain. Pain in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes is one sign of a heart attack.

Upper body parts can also experience pain during the beginning of a heart attack. This includes both arms, the neck, the jaw, or the stomach.

This pain may come and go.

Those experiencing an anxiety attack don't normally have the severe pain of a heart attack victim.

Another common occurrence with an anxiety attack is rapid breathing. Sometimes the person feeling the rapid breathing will think they can't breathe.

In truth all they need to do is to reminder their self to take a deep breathe and self-regulate their breathing.

This can be very difficult to accomplish in the midst of a strong anxiety attack. Shortness of breath is another early sign of a heart attack.

It can occur with or without chest pain. Cold sweat, nausea, and lightheadedness can also be present in the beginning of a heart attack.

There is no connection between anxiety attacks and heart attacks other than the symptoms of both feel so much alike.

Often the person in the midst of an anxiety attack does not think clearly. They become much less rational and therefore it can be hard to convince them they are not having a heart attack.

Remember, the level of pain, the areas of pain, and the type of breathing is usually similar, yet different in a heart attack and an anxiety attack.

Medical evaluation is the only way to determine the difference during an attack. After the attack the person with an anxiety attack will return to normal and have no symptoms.

That's not usually the case with a heart attack.

All medical professionals advise that if you're not sure what's happening you should seek medical attention immediately.

While it may be embarrassing to find out there's nothing wrong except being anxious its better to get checked out.
