What Can Cocoa Do For My Heart?

A 2006 study from a joint team of researchers from the University of California-Davis and the University of Dusseldorf in Germany ascertained that the compound epicatechin found in cocoa is directly linked to improved circulation and other hallmarks of cardiovascular function. The researchers explained that the relaxation response observed in the blood vessels of the subjects was mediated by nitric oxide (NO), a key signal released by the inner lining of blood vessels (the endothelium). Because the vessels are able to relax and become less stiff, they are less susceptible to clotting, blockage and risk of high blood pressure. (1)

Cesar G. Fraga of the University of Buenos Aires recently demonstrated a rise of chocolate-derived procyanidins in the blood of men and women who had just eaten cocoa-based foods. His team found that blood sampled two hours after cocoa consumption protected its circulating lipids from oxidation. The more chocolate they ate, the better the protection. (2)

Nutritionist Carl L. Keen of the University of California-Davis says that prostacyclins are naturally occurring compounds that inhibit platelet clotting, reduce risk of thrombosis and blood vessel constriction, and prevent the oxidation of LDL (the "bad" cholesterol), as well as its entry into the blood vessel walls, where it can result in inflammation. Keen's study, published in a 2005 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that the procyanidin and flavonol content of cocoa again demonstrated significant antioxidant properties and the ability to protect the heart and vascular system. If you have high blood pressure, a daily serving of flavonol-rich dark chocolate might lower your blood pressure, researchers report in Hypertension: Journal of the American Heart Association. (4) "Previous studies suggest flavonoid-rich foods - including fruits, vegetables, tea, red wine, and chocolate - might offer cardiovascular benefits, but this is one of the first clinical trials to look specifically at dark chocolate's effect on lowering blood pressure among people with hypertension," said one of the authors of the study. The findings also prompted the researchers to recommend that flavonoid-rich foods should be part of an overall healthy diet, and dark chocolate should be part of that effort.

The More Cocoa, the Better

When it comes to the health benefits ascribed to chocolate, they're almost exclusively related to the dark, bittersweet-tasting chocolate and to products with a cocoa content of 60% or more. Because healthy polyphenols are found in the cocoa bean but not in the milk, cream, sugar, waxes, fillers, fats and preservatives that are often added to chocolate, the darker the chocolate the better. It's also important to preserve chocolate's antioxidant properties and avoid "Dutch process" and alkalinization. Similarly, because heat can destroy cocoa's polyphenols, choose cocoa beans that have been cold-pressed.

Cinnamon And Heart Health - What's The Connection Between This Tasty Spice And Heart Health?

Is there a connection between cinnamon and heart health? Indeed, heart disease is the number one killer in the United States and many people are looking for preventive strategies to "stave" off cardiovascular disease. As such, there has been an explosion of interest in wanting to learn more about cinnamon and heart health.

Indeed, cinnamon is most known as one that has ability to destroy fungal infections, prevent ulcers, soothe indigestion, and fight tooth decay and gum disease.

So, what's the connection between cinnamon and heart health? Before we delve into what might possibly be the connection between these two, let's go over the controllable risk factors of heart disease.

High LDL "bad" cholesterol. Low HDL "good" cholesterol. Diabetes. High blood pressure. Tobacco. Lack of exercise. Unhealthy nutrition. Overweight/Obesity. Heavy alcohol intake. Stress.

Now, without further adieu, let's discuss what might be a possible connection between cinnamon and heart health.

In recent years, some studies have shown that this aromatic and tasty spice supports healthy blood sugar levels, which may be helpful for type 2 diabetes sufferers. In addition, cinnamon has shown to improve cholesterol levels in people with type 2 diabetes. As such, the connection here between cinnamon and heart health is that diabetes and cholesterol are risk factors of heart disease.

According to a study published in the December issue of Diabetes Care (Diabetes Care 26:3215-3218, 2003) who states:

"In conclusion, cinnamon reduced serum glucose, triglyceride, total cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol levels in people with type 2 diabetes. Because cinnamon would not contribute to caloric intake, those who have type 2 diabetes or those who have elevated glucose, triglyceride, LDL cholesterol, or total cholesterol levels may benefit from the regular inclusion of cinnamon in their daily diet. In addition, cinnamon may be beneficial for the remainder of the population to prevent and control elevated glucose and blood lipid levels."

It's important to note that although the studies are indeed interesting, more studies are needed to prove cinnamon's effectiveness in treating diabetes. On the other hand, it doesn't hurt to use more of this spice in your diet. However, keep in mind that the amounts of cinnamon used to provide the glucose and cholesterol benefits was much larger than what is typically used in cooking and seasoning.

For example, the aforementioned study involved six groups. "Groups 1, 2, and 3 consumed 1, 3, or 6 g of cinnamon daily, respectively, and groups 4, 5, and 6 were given placebo capsules corresponding to the number of capsules consumed for the three levels of cinnamon. The cinnamon was consumed for 40 days followed by a 20-day washout period." ((Diabetes Care 26:3215-3218, 2003 Study.)

What Causes Heart Flutters and Are They Dangerous?

If you have had heart flutters or heart palpitations, to give them another name, then it can be extremely worrying. It is always worth getting it checked out by a doctor as heart flutters are occasionally an indication of a larger problem. Generally speaking however, if you are in good physical health they do not indicate an underlying heart condition and are usually the result of physical exertion, fear anxiety, an excess of caffeine or too much smoking. Some prescription drugs cam also lead to heart flutters or palpitations.

When your heart is working normally it is told to beat by electrical impulses. These normally originate in the upper right chamber of the heart (the atrium). With a normal heart beat the electrical impulse then moves to the lower chambers of the heart called the ventricles. As these are stimulated the heart muscle contracts and blood is pumped into the aorta.

Heart palpitations occur when this normal rhythm is interrupted. They can last anything from a few seconds to several minutes. The fluttering that you feel when this goes on can be very disturbing. Even when tested by their doctor and reassured that there is no cause for concern, anxiety sufferers will often continue to worry about the fluttering of their hearts, leading to further anxiety and more palpitations.

Having suffered from anxiety, panic attacks and heart flutters for over fourteen years I succeeded in stopping the palpitations only by successfully treating the underlying anxiety disorder.

Can Yoga Be Used To Treat Medical Conditions?

While many people are aware of benefits of yoga such as relaxation, improved flexibility, and muscle tone, few may know about additional positive results that can be achieved. Breathing through the left nostril was included, which is thought to stimulate the right hemisphere within the brain. According to yogis, multiple psychiatric functions are controlled by the right hemisphere.

Benefits for heart disease

The effect of yoga on heart disease is one of the most investigated areas. Dr. Dean Ornish designed the first heart disease program to partly reverse the condition through diet and lifestyle rather than surgery. A key component of his program was yoga because it slows the heart rate and lowers the blood pressure. Biochemical benefits from yoga include a reported antioxidant effect. The exercise has also been shown to decrease triglyceride and cholesterol levels and boost the functioning of the immune system. Each of these aspects can make a positive impact on the heart.

Yoga as therapy

Medical researchers are now exploring benefits of the exercise called therapeutic yoga, which is also referred to as integrative yoga therapy (IYT). This practice is sometimes recommended as an adjunct treatment for various medical conditions. Most of these studies are being conducted outside the U.S. but the National Institute of Health is involved in trials regarding the effect of yoga on multiple sclerosis and insomnia.

Help with asthma and arthritis

IYT is being further explored concerning conditions like asthma and arthritis. Integrated yoga programs like Pranayama and Yogasana reduce the construction of bronchial tubes, helping to reduce frequency of asthma attacks. The inflammation in the joints that characterizes arthritis results in stiffness and pain. With the modification of some poses, forms of yoga like Ashtanga, Vinyasa, Lyengar, and Bikram can be used to treat arthritis pain.

Some researchers are event exploring whether practicing yoga slows the process of aging. If this is found to be true, there will likely be many more people practicing this form of exercise in the future.

The best way for a person to learn about positive effects of yoga on medical conditions is to do research and discuss this with professionals.
